I graduated from dental assisting school. Did very well. Had a few jobs, wasn't worth the pay the way doc's treated me. Thinking of going into Hygiene, do the doc's have a little more respect for hygienist rather an assistant?
Anyone a dental hygienist?
CRYSTAL,
ANY SMART DENTIST KNOW VERY WELL THAT THEIR HYGIENE DEPARTMENT IS A LARGE PART OF THEIR PRACTICE.AS A DENTAL HYGIENIST YOU WILL BE IN A DIFFERENT CROWD THAN AN ASSISTANT.
YOU WILL DEFINITELY BE TREATED WELL BY DENTISTS.
Reply:Go for it!!!! go to dental hygiene school. It is hard but it will be great to get paid $40 p/h
Reply:Getting respect from your peers or boss has nothing to do with what your job title is. You will get what you give. Don't tolerate lack of respect. However if you are a person that does not give respect when warranted than you will never receive it.
ADD:
Doc Albert,
No she won't be in a different crowd. She is a person. Hygiene make up a part of a team, just as the assistants, FD, doctors etc. As you know many hygienists have a terrible attitude, a holier than thou attitude. In my opinion when you make blanket statements like that you are in fact perpetuating the stereo type that hygienists are prima-donna's when in fact most of us are not. I can see that you value your hygiene department and that should be admired, however a good assistant can be just as valuable as a hygienist. People choose different careers for many different reasons, should one person be "in a different crowd" because they chose such? While I can bring production numbers up doing what I do, couldn't the same be said of a good assistant that makes your job easier and more efficient, thus you produce more and faster? Just my thoughts.
Reply:I'd go for it. I am trying to get into the dental hygienist program now. My aunt has been one for 20+ years and loves it. If you find a good dentist, they will treat you differently. They will do what it takes to keep you. There is a shortage of hygienists and schools to educate them.
Good Luck and wise choice.
