I am considering going to school to be a dental hygienist. I went to college for general studies for 2 years and now I have to pick my major. Do I go to a tech school, community college, or 4 year university. How long does the degree take? How flexible is the job, since I want to start a family in the next five years? What are the pros and cons of this profession, please be honest? Any other information about the career would be helpful! I greatly appreciate it!
Dental Hygienist questions...?
well, if you have completed your 2 years already, you should apply to a tech school, but not any tech school.. it has to be one that offers the hygeine program... not a whole lot do... then based on your gpa from your first 2 yrs, they will decide if they want to interview you... its a very competitive degree to get... i think in my state, only 8 schoold offer the program and each year, about 250 apply to each of them, and then only about 20 actually get into the school to get a hygiene degree. and if thats what you decide to do, you will need to get a job in a denist office doing assisting or something similar.now, they like you to have at least a year experience to accept you into the school.
it is a great carreer with great pay and fexible hours.... the average hygeinist make about $200+ a day, and many only work part time...
the downside is, it has a very high burnout rate.. meaning ppl usually grow tired of it after a couple years, the nmove onto another career.
so, if i were you, what i would do is apply at dental offices in your area, and try to get an assisting job... work there for a lil while to see if its something you wanna put that much work into.... dental assisting will give you an idea of what a dental hygeine job will be like. and if you end up wanting to go thru with it, you will have the dental experience to help you get into the school.
Reply:be a dentist, they get lots of money!
Reply:I know there is a high demand for this job. you can take dental classes and start working sooner than you think.
Reply:Wonderful job but the strain on your back, neck and shoulders is horrible. Not to mention your hands. I loved working in the dental field and the burnout rate is uaually due to having to put up with stressed out doctors while you are physically hurting.
However the patients are awesome!! If you do it just pace yourself- alot of hygienists work at 2 offices. It is usually part time for a reason but the money is so good they push themselves to hard.
Reply:I love it. It can be very hard on neck, back, shoulders, hands, etc. YOu do the same thing daily, so many people burn out quickly. The school is hard 2-3 year dental hygiene program once you get in. You may need some specific classes before you can enter. The job is flexible b/c you can set your hours and days.
