How can I see a dental hygienist without seeing a dentist first?

My regular dentist is in Los Angeles but it'll be another six months before I see him. Every dental practice I call here (London) tell me I need to register with their dentist and be seen by him first. All I need is a cleaning how can I get this done without the expense of seeing a dentist first? I also don't want any xrays as I've just had some six months ago when I saw my dentist.

Normally in England a dentist will refer you to a hygienist. You will have to be registered at a practice to see a hygienist

Reply:I did a study/survey on "job satisfaction of dental hygienist" and i was refered to dozens of dental hygienists by dentists without "booking" with them. They were all eger to help me with my survey and get me out of their office so they could see the next patient. So you could "Do" your own survey/study on (let's see....) Knowledge, and practices of hygienists on infection control, or anything else.Just go in with your student I.D (if you are astudent) or anything that will make it more believable, and when you get reffered, take ur questioneer with you so after the hygienist fills it out you can ask to book an appointment. Long but it should work. Let me know what the findings of your "study" were. LOL.


Or simply ask your dentist to send you a referal to one he knows in London. Quite simple.

Reply:You wont have to have dental xrays you can always decline them. In NHS practices as far as i am aware you HAVE to see a dentist before hie/she can refer you to see a dental hygienist. It is the same in Prisons (useless fact for you)

Reply:My boyfriend went through the same thing. Dont just let them tell you wha tyou "have" to do, tell them that all you want is a cleaning pure and simple.

Reply:I often have a scale and polish without seeing my dentist. There are Dental Schools in the UK where hygenists are trained and they will clean your teeth FOC. I have just Googled Dental Schools and King College has a Dental School, it's in London telephone 0207 826 5454.
Reply:You can't. A hygeinist can only work under the direction of a dentist. They can only carry out a treatment that a dentist has prescribed in writing for them.
Reply:anne k is correct to have a scaling it needs to be prescribed by the dentist under nhs regulation, i know at the moment a check up in scotland is free and to get a scaling is £9.76. it may be different in london, but every place will be the same price unless it is a private practice
