How do I become a Dental Hygienist?

I currently go to a 4-year university and I am majoring in biology. All I know is that you need to cover prerequisites before you can go to Dental Hygiene school. Biology is a hard major...am I doing all this hard work for nothing? Is there anything else I can major in to cover all my prerequisites for Dental Hygiene? One more...do I need to take two semesters of Organic Chemistry...and do I need to take Anatomy??? Im so confused :(

How do I become a Dental Hygienist?
Find the dental hygiene program you want to attend - that school will be the only one that can tell you for sure what your prerequisites are. NEVER trust someone that is not from the university you're applying to for advice on the precise classes you need to take. Also, go directly to the dental hygiene department for advice, the transfer advisor will just tell you what you need to get into the school, not the program.

You probably need a nutrition class, and possibly chemistry, that's about all I know.
Reply:pre courses at college 2 yrs and 2 yrs at dental school.................look up the dental school in your state on web and see curriculum for hygenists...lots of science,no gettin around that....
Reply:You have to have one year of prerequisite courses. Which includes mostly sciences. Then you apply to the dental hygiene program. I had to have 3 letters of recommendation, Hep B shots, blood work, TB test, etc. They gave me a list when I entered college as a dental hygiene major, so I had a year to get everything together. I was also interviewed by the dentist that was over the program. Then I had to wait and see if I got accepted (they sent a letter). I went to school for 2 more years to get my AAS degree in dental hygiene. I then had to pass a national and state board test to be able to practice dental hygiene. After I passed both of those, my license was sent to me via snail mail and the rest is history. Hope this helps. Good luck.

The sciences I had to take included A%26amp;P I and II and organic chemistry I %26amp; II. I got my degree at a junior college.
Reply:it all depends on where you live and are going to college because i didnt take any prerequisites before i went into hygiene, i just took everything all at once for 2 years and that was it, i was done. I had to take the state and regional boards as well, but every area has different requirements. its quite easy in the new york area. but i remember taking psycology, sociology, human biology , microbiology, pharmacology, two english classes, one was online which was very convienient. i think that was all the extras...hope this helps and good luck because your going to need it!
