I'm not a hygienist, but here in Central Virginia hygienists on average make $35/hr+. Obviously more experienced hygienists make more. Most hygienists are able to work at several offices if they choose because they can work 1 or 2 days a week per office. This could translate into job flexiblilty because you could choose which days of the week to work. In the state of Virginia a hygienist is required to complete a state approved program at a college or university. These programs are usually 2 years in length, and tend to be hard to get into. The demand for dental hygienists is high in our neck of the woods, so hygienists seem to be able to make more demands of their employer such as higher pay, more flexible working hours etc. and can get away with it due to the shortage. You obviously need to check with your state board of dentistry to find out the requirements to obtain a dental hygiene license. Some states, such as Alabama will allow the dentist to train his own hygienist, but probably in those states the demand is lower thus resulting in a lower pay scale for the hygienist, but you'll have to obtain that info on your own.
