Give up Dreams to do something your not sure you really want, like be a Dental Hygienist?

I love to sing but I need alot of training, self confidence wise, musically and need to get out there more and I know there is a good chance I won't make it but I am afraid that if I study as a dental hygienist I will get tired of it and I am a person who doesn't like to be in a routine cooped up in an office my whole life and I hate working in office settings as I had bad experiences with people who work in the office/business atmosphere. I like to travel, move around, be outside and help people. But I also want to make enough money to survive and live comfortably. I feel its my duty to take care of my mom and sister since my father passed away but I am not sure what to do. My grade point average is 3.4 and dental hygiene is so demanding and I am not sure I want it that badly. Help! Is there anyone in this position and not sure what to do?

I'm not exactly in your situation, and I know it's probably complicated and difficult. But if you decide to become a dental hygenist, it doesn't mean you have to stay one. I would say, study to be a dental hygenist. Continue practicing your singing, any and every chance you get. When you start to make some money, take professional lessons. Do whatever you can to keep singing, and maybe you can get yourself into that once you have the right contacts and the money you need. I don't know if that's the best advice, but I hope that it helps. I'm going into journalism, but what I really want to do - what I've always wanted to do - is write novels. I'm hoping that as I continue to get practice and money, I'll be able to do what I really want full time. In the meantime, I can write on the side, which keeps the desire and the hobby alive. I think if you continue to sing whenever you can, that might help with the monotony of the office or your studies. There probably isn't one right direction you can take with your life, and I am young and certainly don't have the answers, but make sure you do what you want - even if it's just on the side - because I think it's our dreams and desires that keep life worth living.
Reply:Why is it your duty to take care of your mom and sister? Is your mom sick or something?

As an alternative career to help support you while you go after your dream, how about being a real estate agent? They aren't cooped up in an office all day, and you can make a comfortable living this way.

Don't give up your dream, but consider getting a good job like real estate or something else that can help support you in the meantime.
Reply:You should never give up your dreams. You have a good grade average. Smart kid. Singing is great but many people starve and never make it. You should have something to support yourself while you pursue your singing. Dental Hygienists make good money and you would have evenings and weekends to follow your dream.
